URGENT APPEAL

URGENT APPEAL :

The Strand Moslem Primary is currently urgently in need of funds to erect a fence along the Nolte Street boundary of the school. Due to a lack of a fence, vandals and other negative elements have targeted our school on numerous occasions, stealing anything they could lay their hands on. Our learners’ and staff’s safety are also continually at risk.

Besides the fence, our school has another major challenge and that is accommodation. Currently the school has 902 learners on its roll. The current infrastructure is under severe pressure to accommodate all these learners. The school management was forced to accommodate some classes in containers which are presenting many problems to our learners and educators such as extremely cold conditions in winter, extreme heat in summer, leakage after heavy rainfall, cramped space, etc.

The current state of our school’s fence and container classrooms can be seen from the photos.

The Strand Muslim Community, Management and Staff of the school is kindly appealing to you to assist us with the above mentioned problems facing our school.

If you would like to make a contribution for a good cause, the school’s banking details are as follows :

Ridaah Leeman and Waleed Smith from the Strand Moslem School left for Dubai to participate in an International Cricket Tournament, from 13 March to 22 March. The tournament will be contested amongst teams from England, Bangladesh, India, West Indies, UAE, Sri Lanka, the USA and Kenia. The two players went through the various selection processes to ultimately be picked for the Western Cape Junior Cobras.

This is a remarkable achievement considering the school has no playground, never mind a sports field. All sporting activities have to be executed among the cars or on the tarmac. Despite the lack of facilities Strand Muslim Primary is still very competitive in the local cricket, rugby, soccer and netball leagues. The only sporting facilities are the municipal fields which is quite a distance from the school. The municipal fields are shared by the 3 other primary and 2 high schools as well as the local rugby, cricket and football clubs. Imagine what can be achieved if the school had their own sports field and facilities.

The achievements of the boys are even more significant if one considers that they were been coached by full-time educators and not privately as is the case with some of the neighbouring schools.

The youngsters started playing cricket for the U/11 team of the school two years ago under the watchful eyes of Mr Riyaad Rhoda and Waheed Waggie. They spotted their talents and drove them hard to achieve their current level of skills. The players joined the Peninsula Cricket Academy when they returned from the National Tournament.

The school, staff and parents wish to express their sincere gratitude towards all sponsors and contributors from the community who made it possible for the players to experience this once –in- a- lifetime opportunity.

ICT TO THE PUBLIC :

As part of the school’s sustainability plan, Strand Moslem Primary in association with Khanya (the organization responsible for promoting ICT in schools) presented an ICT course to the public during October – November 2008.

25 Members of the Strand Community participated in the 20 hour course which took place over 6 Saturdays. The following modules were covered : M.S. Word, M.S. Excel, M.S. Power point and Internet and E-mail.

All the participants found the course very beneficial. The school plans to present future courses to the public at a minimal fee.

Sport

Strand Moslem Primary has a very proud sporting tradition dating back many decades. As Mr. Lynch, former principal of C.R. Rhoda mentioned : "Ons by C.R. Rhoda was altyd baie bek-af wanneer ons n rugby- of netbalwedstryd teen die Mossies verloor het. Net so het ons weer bors uitgedruk wanneer ons hulle die dag uitgestof het. "

Over the years the Strand Moslem Primary has been very competitive with their neighbouring schools and has produced many top quality sportsmen and women who participated at National and Provincial Level. There are so many, that we will do a great injustice not to mention all the names.

Currently the school is offering the following sporting codes :
Rugby, netball, soccer, cricket, athletics, cross country and golf.
The school also offered hockey a few years ago, but due to a lack of facilities and proper hockey equipment the code was abolished.

Sadly like many previously disadvantaged schools, the school has never had its own sportsfield. Currently the school shares the Abbatoir Municipal Sportsgrounds with Dr. Joubert Primary and at least 3 other rugby clubs.

Surf Walk

The Annual Surf Walk is one of many events organised by the school to raise much needed funds. The surf walk takes place on a yearly basis and is usually held in the first quarter of the year. The school fees at Strand Moslem Primary is a mere R500 per annum which is much less than what some schools charge per month. Fundraising efforts like the surf walk is therefore vital in order to provide quality education.

Building Project

Towards the end of the 1990’s Strand Moslem Primary was growing in popularity and the demand for admission into the school was bigger than ever before. The school was one of a few dual medium schools (Afrikaans & English) from the previously disadvantaged schools. With the expansion of Strand and the influx of people from the Cape Metropolitan area as well as many refugees from African countries flocking to South Africa, the school experienced a huge accommodation problem.

BUILDING PROJECT :
Mr. Fanie, the principal had a vision to build a new wing consisting of 10 classrooms and a media centre. Some at the time, saw his intention to be very ambitious and too expensive. Mr. Fanie and the School Governing Body at the time, persisted with their plans.

Slowly but surely the building plans were set in motion. Towards the end of 2004 a few volunteers from the community started with the foundation. At the time, the progress made were very slow and funds were limited. In 2005, Mr. Ganief Darries and his company Macsand became involved. Suddenly the building took shape in a short space of time. Mr. Darries and Macsand invested a large amount of capital, resources and labour into the project and by the end of 2006, the new wing which was a wild dream a few years earlier, was now a reality.

Representatives from the Department of Minerals and Energy , The Western Cape Education Department, The Premier of The Western Cape, Mr. Ebrahim Rasool and the Mayor of Cape Town all expressed their sincere appreciation and admiration to the school and the Strand Muslim Community for successfully undertaking a project of this magnitude.

The building project will continue to serve as an example to other communities of what can be achieved when local business and communities with dedication and ambition combine.
