Building Project

Towards the end of the 1990’s Strand Moslem Primary was growing in popularity and the demand for admission into the school was bigger than ever before. The school was one of a few dual medium schools (Afrikaans & English) from the previously disadvantaged schools. With the expansion of Strand and the influx of people from the Cape Metropolitan area as well as many refugees from African countries flocking to South Africa, the school experienced a huge accommodation problem.

BUILDING PROJECT :
Mr. Fanie, the principal had a vision to build a new wing consisting of 10 classrooms and a media centre. Some at the time, saw his intention to be very ambitious and too expensive. Mr. Fanie and the School Governing Body at the time, persisted with their plans.

Slowly but surely the building plans were set in motion. Towards the end of 2004 a few volunteers from the community started with the foundation. At the time, the progress made were very slow and funds were limited. In 2005, Mr. Ganief Darries and his company Macsand became involved. Suddenly the building took shape in a short space of time. Mr. Darries and Macsand invested a large amount of capital, resources and labour into the project and by the end of 2006, the new wing which was a wild dream a few years earlier, was now a reality.

Representatives from the Department of Minerals and Energy , The Western Cape Education Department, The Premier of The Western Cape, Mr. Ebrahim Rasool and the Mayor of Cape Town all expressed their sincere appreciation and admiration to the school and the Strand Muslim Community for successfully undertaking a project of this magnitude.

The building project will continue to serve as an example to other communities of what can be achieved when local business and communities with dedication and ambition combine.

What a wonderful initiative! Congratulations to you and the school.

Since the building project is such an inclusive project, I'll also send you a few paragraphs about last year's Strand Moslem Primary School Alumni initiatives and a pics about our functions to add to the gallery.

Well done and keep up the good work.
